Scales exist in many capacities (range and accuracy). A kitchen scale may weigh between 0 and 1kg to the nearest gram. This is accurate enough to decide how much postage to put on a letter.
Scales also exist that weigh to the nearest tenth, hundredth, or thousandth of a gram.
I have one that weighs 0 to 100gm to the nearest hundredth of a gram. I'm not sure how I would use it philatelically. I just checked a single definitive stamp that weighed 0.04gm. That is not enough accuracy to give me any information.
I have several "gunpowder" scales that measure in grains and there are cheap digital scales that will even measure in carats. For around $20, you can get a decent digital scale that will measure anything.
Yes I am referring to a scale to weigh. Not to weigh stamps but to weigh prepared covers and mailings to determine the correct postal rate.
I would like something portable or pocket sized and one that measures in ounces and grams up to approximately 8 ounces or 500 gram.
I have a digital scale that I used for cooking. It reads to 0.1 increments and can weigh items over 2 lbs but the platform is small (maybe 6-in in diameter). I have used it for stamps when I wanted to weigh an occasional letter.

I got this one on amazon for $10. Seems to work well for most anything from cooking to mailing.
