Since I've moved back to California after a 26 year absence I am now on a quest for a copy of this reference. The Encyclopedia of the colors of United States postage stamps by R.H. White. While I've been primarily unsuccessful this far. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that my favorite brick and mortar shop does have a copy and after a long good conversation I was told I am welcome to come in and use it anytime I want. How cool is that?

I have also been lucky enough to find a copy of the durland standard plate number catalog.

re: The quest for my copy of Encyclopedia of the colors of United States postage stamps.

Since I live in the DC area I developed the absurd plan to one day visit the Library of Congress and make copies, but its probably useless given the color plates would never come out exactly correct. But I thought about taking color swatches (e.g., Michel color guide) and matching each image on the color plates to its closest swatch.

Problem is, once I get there (Library of Congress) I'll probably find that the books have long walked out the building under the arms of some thief.

Thank you for the information. It's a real possibility that I may be able to attend the auction.
