Have you tried looking at the overprinted stamps from the back?
I am not familiar with the 1922 Irish overprints, but some of the early Rhodesia/British South Africa stamps which were overprinted in either violet-black or black were hard to tell apart from the front, but easily discernible from the back of the stamp.
I am not sure where you can get free downloadable pages for Ireland, but you should be able to create your own fairly easy using AlbumEasy - see the link in my message footer.

I had a lot of trouble distinguishing between a couple of the blue/black overprints.
One day I was scanning an assorted batch of overprints, thinking it would be easier to compare the overprint widths by overlaying rather than sit and measure each overprint.
That's when I realized that (at least for me), I could distinguish between the blue/black overprints a lot easier by simply copying a bottom (or top) half of an overprint and overlaying on another so that the overprint lines up. The subtle color difference shows up decently as you compare the top/bottom half overprints in the combined scan.
Once you get a reference black or blue, it gets fairly easy. The only other thing you have to watch out for when comparing is not confusing darker/lighter overprints for different black/blue overprint.
