I use the same ID when posting on this forum as I use on several others. I created it many years ago, a combination of my pet's name and my birth year. Never thought much about it but now it seems to be creating issues for me in some places- thankfully not here- yet.

Three times in the past couple months I have had other posters on some stamp discussion boards attack me, apparently because of my age. I was in one case called a stupid senile old man. That comment drew a reprimand from the board administrator but it still stings. Shouldn't, but it does. I won't even go into what happens when I post on general discussion boards, lots of 'crawl off and die, you're old' replies. I created a new Delphi account to get around this, so far that seems to work.

Not looking for sympathy, just suggesting that if anyone, like me, uses a screen name that could denote your age, maybe it's a good idea to change it. Society today is relentless with agism. One of those things you never think about until it hits you in the face. Just a word to the wise.

re: What's in a Screen Name?

I think it's fair to say you will never have comments like that on this board. There are all ages here - well, perhaps not so many in their 20s - including many who are older (and rather wiser) than me (I'm a 1947 man), and I've never come across the sort of ageism you mention. Stick with SOR, I should!

re: What's in a Screen Name?

Sorry you had to deal with that. Sometimes folks are simply cruel or looking to troll, so when there's anything out there visible, it's easy for them to jump on it. Again, you should never see that here, but it is good advice you offer. In general, the less people know about you in a public forum the better (probably), unless you are seeking the attention (good or bad) that it can bring.

Can I add that as another 46'er who only retired this year, we ain't dead yet!
I would also suggest that you have a separate name and email account for your social media sites (Facebook etc).
I still have email accounts with a service provider in the UK which I change regularly and use for one time purchases and the like.

Sad part is that you could convince half the general public that Ben Franklin was born in 1902! Laughing

re: What's in a Screen Name?

Belated thanks to all who replied.

I have since created a new screen name for Disqus, the application I use for posting on some general discussion boards. This board is about the only one left where I use the old name.

My wife says that about the worst thing young people can envision is getting old. So when they get the chance they use that as a nasty zinger. It only happened on a stamp board to me the one time, that was on the Delphi Stamp Discussion board, I still go there st times but never have posted since and will not.

I'm a 1943er and I am (was) a toolmaker /injection mold maker and I could care less what anyone thinks about my age. I'm too old to worry about that kind of stuff. I only worry about, When will my stamps get here.Happy

My user name here is simply the stamp I collect! Nice and easy!

On model car boards, I was always Model Citizen and back when you could only have 10 digits in your email address I was ModlCitizn.

I started using Winedrinker years ago, as a name for my avatar in World of Warcraft, Second Life, and other on-line games. And I drink wine. I still dabble in WoW, but stamps have taken over most of my spare time...as well as most of my spare change.

AMSD is merely an acronym for one of my favorite collecting areas: Air Mail Special Delivery, although I guess I might have had that Tsarist Tsounding TSOC: Tied Seals on Cover.

And I never use my birth year.... no one would believe some so old could be so dumb and someone so young could look so awful.

I'm the go-to person among family and friends for music trivia.....thus the name.

Many of my friends call me Musicman instead of my given name.

Also was a drummer in a band - many, many moons ago.

My wife is Chinese, which sparked my interest in the stamps of that country.
Youpiao is the Chinese word for stamp.

re: What's in a Screen Name?

Mine is the low mileage car I purchased out of a 35 year storage from the original owner when he returned from being overseas. I campaigned it for two years in the Southeast US preparing it for the big event; driving it to the Studebaker Grand Nationals show. The avatar shows me in the show line in front of the Studebaker National Museum.
