BTW, Stampworld catalog for France shows appox 6400 listings, Colnect's catalog shows 8402 and is sortable by face amount. You may want to look there also in the future.
Gibbons mentions that the set of 19 (eleven Mariannes and eight coqs) was printed in Algeria and put on sale in Corsica 'after the Allied landing', and later in Paris on 15 November 1944. Corsican collectors could therefore acquire the set sometime between 13 September and 4 October 1944 - one obviously inclines to the latter date, or even later.
It does raise the intriguing question of how early the set was actually printed in anticipation of a successful landing. Clearly they were ready when the occasion called.
In a similar way, the 'Arc de Triomphe' set was printed in Washington, USA, before being brought over on D-Day. (Or maybe D-Day + several.) It would be interesting, in both cases, to find out when the earliest post-invasion covers exist. France (as I have mentioned elsewhere) was inundated with definitives in the post-invasion months, for reasons that are not entirely clear, but which invite speculation.
WB, I would suggest that you do join up on Colnect as their basic membership is free and simple. It will then let you see 100 items at a time instead up just 10 when you use their catalog which will cut down on scrolling time. A very nice feature is the ability to click on a stamp image and then see which members have it available to swap/trade. I have been using this to help get issues for Antonius Ra to complete his collection. Just got the last Berlin issues he needed to finish his collection of that country. They have their own in house message system with an auto-translation feature that lets members communicate. My ID there is meostamps if you wish to look up my profile and see how I am using their system. Works great to fill those empty spaces in a collection and swap out your extras for what you need. Feel free to contact me via SOR if you or anyone else has any questions about the site.
Colnect is a good basic list to refer to before delving further with better, more detailed information.
However like all on-line catalogues it is nowhere near complete. Because an item does not appear in Colnect does not mean it doesn't exist.
You need to use multiple on-line sources, including country-specific sites, specialised exhibits and ALL the message boards, blogs and other sources you can access.
I am an all-world collector and I have a "crib sheet" of about 100 well-used sites to look at before I start asking questions here. I find about 90% of what I am looking for in the first 10 clicks. This is not to decry asking here but for me personally the original research os often the thing and to some extent asking here is an admission of personal failure!
I'm just getting back into collecting after 30 years, said by just about everyone here. But I really do like to read the questions and the tremendous knowledge, and interesting content, by those who take time to read and answer. I am thankful to both the askee and the answerer.
I don't think I can post all 100 ! My fingers will wear out. However I will sort out the most common and put them up. Are you looking at all world info. or specific countries?
