As in many other countries, the price for a Dutch stamp for a normal, 1st class domestic letter increases once more. Since 2011, there has been a price hike of at least 5% each year.

As a result, the price of a single stamp will be two times as high as it was 10 years ago.

Compared to other countries it is still relatively cheap, but still... We just do not send enough letters nowadays.

Jan-Simon,

Can you tell us in US dollars what the first class letter rate is/will be?

And so...

does that mean that the US is one of the countries where first-class postage is considered relatively cheap?

(not a snide remark - just a curious question)

Well from the small sample I could find, it would appear that the US has one of the cheapest domestic rates around. In 2015 Hong Kong's domestic rate was $1.70 which was at that time, equal to 21 cents (US). I don't think it has increased that much since.

I think France is hoiking their rate up to €0.85. Australia seems to increase its rates more times in a year than anyone else.

Here in Australia our international postage rates have just increased up to $2-10 Asia pacific and $2-95 ROW ,but we do get 50 grams for these rates.
Our local rate is $1-00 or $1-50 priority.

I see your question re US dollar conversion has been answered already.
Germany is also relatively cheap nowadays:
€ 0.70 for a letter up to 20 grams, € 0.85 to 50 grams, 1.45 to 500 grams and 2.60 to 1 kilo. But yes Randy, the USA is not that bad when it comes to its postal rates, especially when you consider that the country is slightly bigger than the Netherlands Rolling On The Floor Laughing.

Jan-Simon - Do you pay tax when you purchase postage stamps like we do in Canada?

In my opinion, our postage rates in Canada are ridiculous - $20.60 International Rate 250g to 500g, $10.30 100g to 250g, $5.90 50g to 100g, $3.60 30g to 50g, $2.50 up to 30g

First Class Domestic Rate $1.00 up to 30g (#10 envelope) $1.80 oversize or bulky up to 100g

PLUS TAXES - Tax rates vary depending on which Province you are in when you purchase postage stamps.

Hi Liz,
No, stamps are exempt from VAT. If this or a next government would change their mind, it would mean another 21% increase...

The international rate you refer to, isn't that airmail? I was under the impression surface mail was considerably cheaper.

Wow! Here in the USA we don't pay any taxes on postal services (beyond what's already in the rate!) We don't have a national sales tax, and the post office is federal and exempt from state laws and taxation. USPS is exempt from local weights and measures laws, local land zoning laws and holds power of eminent domain on property.
