General Philatelic/Gen. Discussion : Who enjoys working on their stamp collectons with a slight alcohol induced buzz? If so, does it enhance your enjoyment and open new vistas or does it dull your senses?

Buzz collecting? I hadn't thought of that one.
Come to think about it, that could explain a few things around here.

For what it's worth, when I was an enthusiastic practitioner of C2H5OH I had little interest in stamps...or my guitar...or much of anything.
As a recovering alcoholic with almost two years sobriety, I credit THE HOARD for a big part of my success. I can concentrate much better and have more stamina when sorting-resorting-reresorting... I wake up to find the right stamps on the right pages well within the appropriate frames... I have an unbounded curiosity and enthusiasm for learning about all stamp-related things... I experience great joy when I find something cool or help a member who gets something from me that they think is cool... and I have no worries about giving away freebies or asking a fraction of what I could when selling (easy when I think of the $600/month after-tax I used to spend on Macallan 18-year-old single malt).
I'm not being "preachy" and don't let this be a "buzz kill", it's just one guy's story. My wife just asked me over our morning coffee if I felt like having some friends over for a cocktail party tonight since it's a crappy rainy day. She said "Just grab a couple bottles of wine on your way back from your meeting, then you'll have the rest of the day for stamps while I get the appetizers ready".
Just one request: please consider drinking lots and getting a big buzz-on before making bids on any of my lots!

I've been known to have a sip or two of Chivas while sorting, scanning, listing... But not enough to make me not pay attention!

Hey Ian.
"Who's my best friend ? My wee pal, my little doggie!"
This reminded me of your countryman Alexi Sayle's song "Didn't You Kill My Brother?"
And your other commentary sounds like a transcript of a tape recording of me from two years ago!

Dave, I don't know that song, I must look it up.
I normally listen to a Goon Show, or I Am Sorry I Haven't A Clue, or Deadringers or The News Quiz while sorting, soaking, listing etc.
I love my radio comedy programmes.
Musicwise its normally the Beach Boys, Queen, The Rolling Stones or Andre Rieu!!

Whilst the sweet libation does not mix well with stamping, I always have a buzz in the ears that sometimes bothers me. Also the husband can become a distraction and there goes the stamp concentration. The puppy always wants to play ball or go out for a walk.
Then we deal with the other type of buzz that brings up really super ideas that I can't remember the next day!

I never drink to excess, but I do enjoy my beer. My German heritage requires I have a beer with my dinner, sometimes two! I seldom drink anything harder.
That said, I rarely crack one open when doing hobby things. First with stamps, I don't want to knock one over! That could be a big issue with stamps! And when I'm model building I find that I get 'into the zone' and forget all about the beer. So it goes warm and gets wasted!

Irish coffee and stamps! Sounds good to me!

Tom/Ben,
With a German heritage, I would think you would like warm beer!

I do find doing some things with a light buzz can be fun. Haven't tried it with stamps.

I never touch the stuff...but i must have SALT and Sweet snacks on hand at all times !

I stay away from snacks (which I love) lest my fingers transfer food material to the stamps. A buzz is always welcome. Summed up, more whiskey and less chips.

Can a combination closet stamp collector and closet drinker exist ?

I LOVE relaxing and sorting a group of stamps while enjoying some nice music at my desk...
AND
I love relaxing with an adult beverage or two every now and again,
BUT
I never mix the two... they're too different moods. With my stamps and other desk hobbies I'm relaxing by focusing if that makes sense...

"Adult beverages"......
that term always gives me a chuckle;
many of those adults who imbibe quite often act like children after a few too many of those "adult beverages"....Lol
I avoid anything that has the potential to cloud my thinking or affect my judgement while working with my stamps.
I do enjoy listening to either classic country or some southern blues-rock in the background, though.
I also tend to enjoy some peanut M&M's while stamping at times....melts in your mouth - not in your hands!

Do not partake of the amber nectar while working on stamps ! There lies the route to tears, thins, creases, perforation damage and other nasties that go bump in the night.

As long as you're not licking hinges!

Never mind that a spill of the nectar can ruin a lot of mint stamps!

Wine was what I used to drink until I broke out with hives over 70% of my body. Can't drink the other due to my medicine.
So I get my buzz from waking up in the morning and seeing that someone bought some of my stamps in my approval books.
I also get a little high just reading all you discussions.

I do..and then i get in my truck and drive the wrong way on the Taconic Parkway !

When I have to concentrate I do that work on the weekend. During the week I only have a small amount of time in the evening. After a few glasses of wine all I'll do is search for auctions on eBay or elsewhere. I already have my target price written down, so no worries of an impulse buy!

Sometimes a little drink helps with the tedious tasks.
Drinking also helps read really extra long discussion titles without making snide comments.

Don't drink and bid. It can be expensive. Stamps look better than they appear.

Hahaha. Or appear better than they really look.

I soak my stamps in vodka, to check the watermarks..then lick them dry

Lol I do enjoy a little beer buzz, then maybe a squirt of scotch.
