I am lusting after owning a US number 1 on cover. So I've been shopping. This one is currently for sale but it strikes me as odd.
In the first photo, the corners of the stamp appear to be rounded. I've never seen any stamp trimmed that way.
Second, I've never seen the use of a real mass produced envelope this old. All of the other Number 1 covers I have saved images of are all on folded letter sheets.
The bidding is light on this one, and it could be had for a good price if it's legit.
and, if you're going to bother to create a valuable cover, make sure to add a red cancel, which, for the number 1, adds about $600 to its CV. That's not to say it is/isn't genuine, but it helps color your flag
(I don't consider myself an authority on these early issues or early covers)
just one der ing

As you thought, rounded corners. And for what it's worth, this doesn't look tied on the left and the barred cancellation? Has this been 'fiddled with' and extended onto the cover. The ink looks a very vivid orange; is this normal?
Another thought has crossed my mind. Is the back of the envelope's flap the correct 'shape' for that era? It suggests to me that this is a gummed envelope. Were these produced at that time?
Is this at auction or in a catalog? The resolution is nowhere near what anyone needs to provide a decent opinion, but the rounded corners are something that doesn't make sense.
No matter how much I needed a #1 I would definitely want a certificate on this one. Stamp, cancel, lack of hi resolution pix. envelope instead of SFL - all are red flags.
Number 1's om cover show up regularly on Ebay - take your time.

There is no premium for the red cancel. Premium cancel prices have a "+" and the first listed is usually the base/common variety, which in the case of #1 is red cancel.
In any case, the specimen on cover shown above is a dog, if its even genuine. Buy a VF 4-margin copy, with a cert. Its worth the price.
This is one of my #1, a first printing, brown shade variety with a red grid cancel.
