Seems a shame to give up being a King, just toss it all away for some fun-loving American woman. I have an "Anniversary of Abdication" cover as well, with a nice cachet of Edward in uniform. (11 Dec 1978)
Abdication Day was December 11, and I just noticed my cover has a December 10 post mark. So this may not be a proper Abdication Day cover after all?

Although Parliament only passed the Abdication Act on Friday Dec 11th, Edward had signed the Instrument of Abdication at 10 a.m. on Thursday 10th. This certainly became public knowlege the same day. The London Evening News had the headline'The King Abdicates' in its afternoon edition, leaving plenty of time for your letter writer in Epsom, Surrey to create his cover and get it in the 5.30 p.m. post.
