A quick description of a patent cancel is that the canceller would cut into the stamp surface at the same time as cancelling the stamp so the ink would soak into the stamp preventing reuse. The little dots in the center of your cancel are actually pin pricks. Look at the backside of your stamp and you should see where the pins puncture the paper.

Fascinating info, Vinman. I've never heard of those. I'm really looking forward to reading your article. I have quite a bit to learn about cancels. The only area I have a moderate knowledge of is the Irish slogan cancels. Some of those are super strange by today's standards, such as "teach your children to clean their teeth" and the ones about getting an "annual xray".
