I'm new to stamp collecting, but I've been enjoying going through my father's collection. He passed away recently and looking through his collection keeps him in my thoughts. Most of his stamps are in a shoebox, bin, dresser drawers, and whatnot, so step one has been to get the collection organized!
I'm a graphic designer, I teach graphic design at a university in North Carolina. I designed a stamp in graduate school. Maybe one day if I'm feeling brave I'll post an image of it and ask what you think of it. Oddly, my is the only stamp my dad put into an album! Go figure.
So after going through my dad's collection I'm really drawn to stamps that were issued between late 1800s and 1960s. I don't think my collection is valuable, but I've been enjoying going through it. I guess I'm interested in some strategies and advice to preserve the collection and prevent damage to the stamps. I posted a question to the Newbie forum earlier.

Welcome, Ben. Enjoy your stamps and, if you are so inclined, share. I am eager to see the stamp you designed, your father was obviously very proud of it.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. -Edmund Burke"
Hi Ben. I understand where you are coming from. My father was a collector / hoarder of a lot of things, none of which I actually had an interest in. He had a few foot lockers full of old electronics and audio magazines and year books. He had carefully kept these in good condition, and moved them with our family every few years since we were a military family. I couldn't just toss them since they meant something to him.
I found a good sense of closure sending these off to new owners, who were indeed interested in them, and adding them to their collections. I didn't get rich selling these, but I had to put his possessions in the right place. This was back in the days when you still communicated with eBay buyers via email, so I shared some thoughts and it left me in a good place.
