I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

The perforations on this block measure 11.2 and has block tagging. (Tagging appears slightly dirty). All this would make the block a Scott #1597. What I am wondering is why the red color bleed and over lap with the blue. Also viewing the back, the colors and image really show through. Is this simply a heaving inking or what?

Thanks for any help.

My guess would be that it was over-inked. What you see on the back is probably offset from the ink being damp when the sheet was laid on top of another.

As a specialist in the US Americana Definitive Series, I concur with Sean. It is an over-inked stamp.

Thanks for the responses. I figured it was just over-inked, but first time I have seen one in this series.

Agreed about the overinking. There may be another unexplained issue however-note that after the star field, into the stripes portion, there are 4 black dots on the top 2 stamps, but only 3 on the bottom 2 stamps. A puzzlement, no?
Best,
Dan C.
