My physician has been getting on my case to do more exercise (Okay, to exercise, period!). I complained that I had no time to fit in a one hour routine. He said "If something is important to you, you will make the time!" He made a very valid point!
So today, I decided to dedicate at least one hour every morning to that too often neglected but important area of my life lately: Working on my stamps. I'll also make room for exercise by walking to and from the "stamp room" to my desk several times, and hefting a few Scott catalogs along the way.
Try balancing two hobbies! Passengers are waiting at the station, but the train isn't coming, because the engineer is in another room working on stamps!
Two hobbies? I have four collections that I need to work on: Stamps, coins (actually, larger than stamps), Space collectibles (mostly sold but still many photos and transparencies need sorting), and autographed books. One whole room and a storage unit devoted to the great unsorted lots. And he wants me to go to a gym? Ha! I can't wait for retirement in five years!
As for Coco, she is my exercise salvation: four to five mile-plus walks per day.
After a mild heart attack last year (September 2014), my cardiologist said 'walk half an hour a day'. I've been doing that, with my trusty hubby walking with me. The first day, I managed a mere 8 minutes and sat down for about half an hour, catching my breath. Each day got longer, and faster. Now I'm up to approximately 30 minutes, depending on my route.
In my neighborhood up north, now within our very large manufactured home park here in Florida. My legs are much better, my heart is still pumping along, my breathing is much better, my balance has improved markedly, and I can see and appreciate the various gardens, homes, birds, 'critters' that I see each day. AND.............I still have a lot of time for my stamps, my reading, and other hobbies.
My last ECG was 'normal', and the cardiologist said not only for my age (a state secret), but for almost any age. Hooray!
Go Marilyn, an hour a day? How about almost half the day ! By the time i get to the gym in Kingston,New York accross the river..work out 45 minutes...shower etc; its lunch time..to make matters worse the guys i work out with go to lunch Monday, Wednesday and Friday and it averages 40 bucks a week..sorry guys, i need that money for stamps !

re: Doctor's orders: Make the time!
Oh geez Peter - you had me laughing so hard, I woke up Dayton!
Good for Coco that she makes you get out - I've often thought the same about myself. If I didn't have the boys all these years, I definitely would have spent the time on stamps but I would rarely see what the outside world looks like. So I'm grateful that (when I have a working wheelchair) I get out and go on Gilligan's Tour with Dayton.

"Let's find a cure for Still's Disease, Breast Cancer and Canine Addison's Disease. We CAN find a cure and save lives!!"
My wife had heart surgery this spring and was told to get some exercise. So we started walking a half hour to an hour a day. Our development is hilly so that adds to the exercise value. Our street is a horse shoe, with both ends off the same main development road, which also starts and ends off the main road. There are several little cul-de-sacs and we mix it up to add to the interest of the walk, aside from our usual nosy way of looking at everything in the neighborhood!
On our street, we usually start by making a right out of our driveway onto a rather steep hill, which gets your heart pumping. I didn't notice such a hill on the other end, so I suggested we reverse our route as it seemed reasonable to want to walk down the steep hill than up it! Wrong! The other end does indeed slope, but gradually over three times the distance! So you exert much more energy on that route since you are climbing longer! So we returned to our original route. We climb the steep hill and get climbing over with!
Sorry folks for a little off topic segway, but Chris you have piqued my interest with your new RR layout build. We have a number of model RR enthusiasts (or wannabes like me) here on SOR, could you please start another thread in the Off Topic area of the DB, and share photos with us of your new RR layout as it progresses. I personally would love to see it as it progresses stage by stage.

Good- you are getting your 10,000 in.
This is really no laughing matter. When I go to the stamp club, there always seems to be another person who has come down with significant health problems.
I was spending hours on my stamp collection, and not getting exercise. Weight 246, elevated blood pressure, and esophageal acid reflux. Not good. I had metabolic syndrome.
Last December, I began to walk for an hour in the morning, then an hour and forty minutes- 10,000 steps. Every day.
I joined Weightwatchers (Yes, I was the only male in the group, but the program is designed for everybody).
I started to lose 1-2 lbs/week.
Today I am 169 lbs, and no longer overweight. I lost the acid reflux. I can jog. I feel great! And stamp collecting is more fun than ever- now that I am taking care of my health.
In the interest of full disclosure, I am a retired physician. One could say I am walking the talk that I gave my patients all these years!
I walk 1/2 an hour each morning, on the way to work. I have that walk from getting off the bus in downtown Ottawa and walking to the shop. Doctor's orders.
I follow the orders. That's why, having been born with a complex congenital heart defect, I am still here.
I walk to my job as a retail manager at a stamp shop.
Life is good.
