Approvals | re: Which One Should I Buy?
I know this is a trick question, but what the heck. I know nothing about German States except what is contained in my Scotts Catalogue. So here goes:
#1 Right
#2 Right, because of the color black
#3 Left, because the right one is too messy
#4 Right, because it is supposed to be blue and black and the EIN is to close to the scroll
#5 Left, has more lines in the curves of the scroll
#6 Left, should be perf 10. The right one looks to be more than perf 10, even though the left one looks reperfed.
#7 Right, just looks neater.
If any of them are legit and the price is right grab them. They cat for quite a bit.

Mel guesses on a couple and gets 7 out of 8 right
These were easy, many of the states have reprints, color varieties & just about every one on a plate is different so consistent ID marks are not easy.
..
1
The left is a Sperati masterpiece. There are at least a dozen ID marks & he got them almost perfectly except the E. The lower leg is always longer. If you look closely, it is amazing how he got all those shapes right and he didn't use a photocopier.
..
2
The right one is genuine. The forger really got the color wrong. However he did get some of the main ID points shown on the right one.
..
3
The right one is the 1872 reprint (essentially a forgery) noted mainly by the items circled
..
4
Easy, the left one has a lot of issues & the color is the main one.
..
5
This one was guessed wrong. The right one is genuine. The forgers generally get the mane wrong, the width of the letters and especially the rocks which must have the right number and the large break in the line below. Also there should be 40 vertical lines in this value.
..
6
The right one is the most common forgery. The leaves look more like tulips.
..
7
The left one fools a lot of people. It was produced by a stamp dealer by the name of Goldner. The crown is the main issue especially the number of pearls in the 2 inside rows of the proper right one.
All of these had the genuine to compare. When you see them on an auction it's a different story. Many of the ones I listed were SOLD because the prices seemed good.
