When I was a lad, the US Post Office was still selling savings stamps; when you filled the booklet to U$D 18.75, you could buy a U$D 25 savings bond that matured in ?7 years.
The very high interest rates of the inflation of the late-1960s onwards pretty much killed both the savings bond program and the savings stamps.
