This postcard measures 3.5" x 4.5" I believe it's Higgings & Gage # 47 issued in 1918
My question is was it cut down? Should the width be 5.5" or is thisImage Not Found the size it was issued

re: Postcard Size Question

Hi pedroguy,

The card looks ok to me as it is.

It sounds like the standard d size of British postcard.

The H&G catalogue lists the card size for each item with its own code letter with a key given at the start of the "Postal Cards" section for the country.

For H&G GB #47 this code letter is given as "e" which is 115 x 89 mm = 4.5" x 3.5".

#47b has code letter "c" which is 139 x 89 mm.

re: Postcard Size Question

"The nice thing about industry standards is that there are so many to choose from."

A bit of the story, as told at http://tuckdb.org/history

"It was due to the efforts of Adolph Tuck that the size of the postcard in England was increased to the size allowed by the Universal Postal Union . Only a small picture and brief message had been allowed on one side with just address and stamp on the other. After four years of negotiations, Adolph succeeded in convincing the British Postmaster General that a larger card could have a picture on one side and a brief message as well as the address and stamp on the other. In 1898, the Postmaster General finally agreed and a new era was begun."
