Tomorrow, August 4, 2015, the USPS is issuing a stamp honoring the US Coast Guard. It looks to be a beautiful stamp. Also, hat's off to Charlie, our resident Machin collector, as his years of service are honored by this stamp.
Maybe unknown to many, but the Coast Guard ship Eagle was built in Germany in the 1930s. The United States seized it from Germany following World War II as part of the war reparations.
This is the stamp our club chose for our show cover this year, so I guess you could say we are honoring Charlie as well as the Coast Guard!
I read somewhere that the Eagle was made of steel that was a quarter of an inch thick. Just went to an exhibit to today about the Titanic - she was made of steel an inch thick.
