I have been collecting stamps since I was around 10 years old. My father gave me a World Stamp book that my grandmother had given to him. I was immediately hooked, however, Houma was a very small town all those years ago and getting stamps other than from letters in the mail was quite difficult. I ended up holding on to that book but did not start collecting stamps again until I returned home from serving in the Marine Corps. By then Houma had grown large enough that we rated a book store that sold stamp supplies. Then a few years later someone introduced me to buying stamps online and my collection has grown. I still have the old World album I started with but I have not really added to it over the years because I really fell in love with United States Postage Stamps. For the last ten or so years I have concentrated on my United States Collection. I have a mint collection and a used collection. Being "self" taught, I lack the knowledge needed to identify the older United States Stamps, which has left me with a huge surplus of stamps I am unsure of the actual "type". Not very many Stamp Collectors in my area so once again I am turning to the internet for help.

I am a USA collector, too; along with a few other countries and topics. You do need literature on the early American stamps. Consider what is available from the American Philatelic Society.

Welcome aboard Shelly, I'm sure you will be able to find many answers to any questions concerning stamps here on SOR. We are a fairly laid back family that likes to joke and kid around and then, like family, next day may snap at you, but it's mostly a great place to spend time.
