I just had an auction expire "unsold." The minimum bid was one penny and there were over 400 different stamps. But the ultimate laugher is that I had interspersed within that mess 20 classic pre-1940 stamps with a catalog value in excess of $250.00! The entire collection could have been had for less than the minimum bid of any other auction then active. Gotta have fun with the SOR auctions because otherwise it is not worthwhile as there is no way a seller will get realistic bids on lots. I doubt I'll do this again, so do not bid on my auctions expecting anything other than what is described.Big Grin

I have to wonder what the purpose of that little hide and seek game could be, other than possibly making SOR members feel foolish and later telling everyone on the discussion board all about it. I won't be fooled again since I'll take Bobbie's advice and not bid on any of his lots. Thumbs Down

Bobby, you might have started something there: "Extreme Stamping." This aspect of our hobby is not for the feint of heart. Surprise

re: No guts, no glory...

LOL! I certainly did not intend to make anyone feel foolish. Just having a bit of fun. This is something which can only be done once, otherwise it could constitute a unfair trade practice (similar to the old "bait and switch" ads of yesteryear), and I wanted to make it clear I would not do it again; divulging my little prank (perhaps it was in bad taste, you be the judge) and announcing it to be a one time thing, was partly to let members know that I was not doing this to promote bidding on future auctions.

It was also partly done to point out that bargains (and 400 stamps for 1 cent plus 71 cents postage is a bargain, anyway you look at it) get passed up everyday on the SOR auctions. I have purchased many classic stamps for next-to-nothing from sellers such as Octjun, Stampfire, Michael####s, CapeStampMan and others, simply because I am observant. So do not buy from me, I'll probably end up giving most unsold auctions to local kids anyway, but do look closer at the auctions that are available from other members. Sure there are a lot of penny stamps being offered, but among them are some real jewels if you just look hard enough.

And yes Michael, my nom de plume on the Auction board is EclecticStamper. I figure I have poisoned my DB name through my nefarious deeds as moderator. I guess I have now done so (at least for some) with "EclecticStamper" as well.

re: No guts, no glory...

Bobby,
You have proved a point that has been stressed before, that most people are in the airport when their ship comes in. I don't see a reason for you to defend your actions, but know the way you feel, that you are offering an explanation for doing so. I have purchased many good lots, for basically peanuts, while we have members complaining about good deals here on SOR. As I said before, after purchasing a $600 stamp at a super low price, when you snooze, you loose. (Oh, BTW, that stamp sold for OVER $300 on another site.)

I also just listed a bunch of lots, for pennies on the dollar and had very little response to most lots. You can bet your sweet bippy that had I been looking at the time, you would have sold (or given away) your lot, without fail.

Don't give up the ship yet,

Mike

No, the postage is 71 TIMES the price of the lot. That's gouging! Winking

I once had an eBay client who won one of my penny auctions for a penny. He immediately emailed me to tell me it was "eBay Rule" that you couldn't charge more for postage than the item! And since it wasn't worth mailing a penny to me, he thought I should just ship the item to him for free! And this tart was serious!

I have also gotten many nice & desirable stamps from three of the sellers Bobby has mentioned on the cheap, usually by "buy it now" as well as Bobby himself.

Bobby I hope you are not really Tommy DeVito.
