Nelson, this is why there have been numerous posts wherein it has been requested to keep images no greater than 900 pixels wide and 1200 pixels deep.
Unfortunately, many members do not have the skills to edit images, so we must continue to repeat these messages. I have offered to resize images for members on several occasions. It is indeed irritating to encounter those large images while reading posts.

There are ways to automatically adapt the image size (both in terms of height/width as well as bytes) on the server before the image is sent to the browser. It eliminates the need for users to resize their uploaded images (although it should not be seen as an invitation to upload very large 4000x3000 px images to the server) If I understood things correctly, this is being researched as we speak.
Lets not forget the URL that are 2,000 characters long and you have to go back-and-forth to the next
room to read all the replies to the thread. When I get to a thread like that I just delete the e-mail and
look at a different thread.
I also 20% compress my stamp images. If a prospective buyer has to wait too long for your image to
load, they will just go elsewhere to shop.
I always compress the images before posting them but this is not a setting for the pixel width. The image won't upload unless it meets the board's size requirements. Is it possible to set this to use pixel width? That would resolve the issue.
I use Windows Snipping tool to save my images. It works great and they are never too big. Simply view the photo or scan. Zoom in or out as needed. Use the tool to make a screen capture of just the image. The default settings should work fine. Then upload the screen capture to SOR. This process is easier than using imaging software to edit the image IMO.

re: Posting Large Images
Nothing could be easier than re-sizing an image using Irfanview.
1) Have the image open in Irfanview.
2) Hit Ctrl-R (or select Image >> Resize from the menu)
3) Click on the "Set New Size" radio button.
4) enter "900" in the width box (leave the height box alone - it will be taken care of).
5) make sure the "Preserve Aspect Ratio" checkbox is checked (this setting will be remembered for the future)
6) Click "OK"
7) Save the image.
You're done.
Since all the settings are retained, after the first one, each new resizing will take about 5 seconds.
If you run into the "Max height" restriction on this Discussion Board (which I believe is 1200 pixels), in step 4, instead of setting the width, set the height instead. If "Aspect Ratio" is checked, it will set the width itself.
