What the heck is going on here? This gem, with a repaired tear, was offered by one of the largest dealers on EBay, with no further description other than front and back pictures.
With an hour to go, there have been 12 bidders, mostly more knowledgable with over 500 transactions.

A "good" plate proof will go anywhere from $500-$1500
This one was sold for $1500
I don't think that a torn one is worth $180
Must be NYStamps - anything he puts up creates a "feeding frenzy"
Also it looks a "little odd" for a proof - gum & perfs?

OMG! I found another one, 78P3, offered by a dealer with over 50,000 transactions. This one is somewhat shady, since it states that it's unused, no gum.

edited: With 15-20 million new collectors in China (estimated 1/3 of world) eager for US stamps, lots of cash & little knowledge, these "rarities" are going to be plentiful. Genuine older valuable stamps are going to be a very good investment again.
The new middle class in China is busy consuming! Good news is that they LOVE American cars, so companies like Ford and GM are doing well there. I work for an international company so I deal with facilities around the world daily. My Chinese colleague was very proud to tell me he owns a Buick Century!
