Greetings from Ottawa, Canada. I am a new member to your club and also new to stamp collecting for the past few month. These forums have been a great source of learning. Unlike a lot of members of this club I did not collect stamps as a child and this is my first foray into the hobby.

At first I wanted to collect all world used. I then pared that down to Canada, United States as well as New Zealand. I also collect used lighthouses and polar bears as my topical collection. I chose used stamps as I like the fact that they have been through the postal system.

I thank you for allowing me to join your club and I look forward to participating and learning as I go.

Thanks BeeSee and 2010ccg for the warm welcome. I am actually a Penguins fan per my username but included the Sens as I am from Ottawa.

We do not have as much snow here as in NS which I here are facing two more storms. Cheryl you sure are tough in the Maritimes. What we always have in Ottawa is cold, cold, cold. It is currently -35 degrees Celsius, which for American is -35 Fahrenheit. The measure of mercury is the same when it is that cold.

Welcome aboard Mark and it's always good to see a new member so enthusiastic about the hobby and SOR at the same time. Enjoy your time spent on your collection and here on the DB on SOR.

Now if all of you "Northerners" will kindly refrain from using words like "below zero" while referring to the temperature, it would be appreciated. My poor little computer is shivering as I type this, since it is use to more humane conditions, such as those here in South Florida. I would like to invite you all down for the winter, but the roads and restaurants are all clogged with people from your locales now, so there is no room available for any of you. SORRY!

Mike -

It's only -24¤C here today - yesterday it was -30¤C.

Last week my partner arrived home after taking the boy out for a walk and proudly announced how much it had warmed up - it was only-12¤C.

Hey Mark,
I'm new to SOR also. There are some very nice people here! I've had some interesting conversations with people and that have some very neat insights into the hobby. I don't live near an "in person" club so I've enjoyed the interactions

Welcome Mark!

I spend a bit of time in Canada for work, and wished we had Tim Horton's in Tennessee.

Hi Mark;

Welcome to our little club.

Tho I've sold on here fairly soon after joining, I've also sold on several other sites (five),
and had a lot of fun doing so. I've sold in a couple dozen nations from Norway to
New Zealand, and in a couple dozen US states as well. I sometimes find myself
accidentally typing stamp colors in French or German, Rolling On The Floor Laughing as I have many customers
from there.

Keep on stamin'....

Thanks everyone for the warm welcomes. Everyone is so nice. I have learnt so much information from the club that I am getting less overwhelmed by all the technical issues of collecting as each day passes by.

To defend us 'Northerners" the cold air actually comes up to us from the U.S. Midwest in places like Colorado , Nebraska and the likes and then forms an arc pushing up into the prairies and and then onto central and Eastern Canada. Was in Boston recently and they have twice as much snow as Ottawa. 😁

However it is so cold today I think I will go get a Tim Hortons cofee.

re: New Member from Ottawa, Canada

My wife and I moved to Prince George, BC, 800 km north of Vancouver, in 1973. In our first winter there, we had a week of -35/-40 C. temperatures. On the first morning, I set out for school, walking because it was less than a kilometre away. Within seconds, my nostrils were so painful that I had to breath through my mouth, and my eyelids were freezing shut. I wondered if they'd eventually find my body in a snowdrift. By the end of that winter, we had 12 feet of snow on the ground.

If it rains? We haven't had a day without rain in two weeks. Ain't nothing lovely about 70,000 feet of stratus cloud hanging above you for days at a time, and occasional rain so heavy you simply can't stay dry outside, even with rain gear. However…

Snowdrops and daffodils are starting to bloom, and we saw a rhododendron in full blossom. Our only snowfall this winter was about 1/10cm back in December. However, the West End where we live is on a peninsula, and the ocean seems to moderate the weather quite nicely. On the North Shore and up the Fraser Valley, they've had several robust snowfalls.
