The questions I have are: (1) is this a common stamp, or one I should take special care of (hinging vs. mounting type care); (2) is there any particular value or scarcity to stamps precanceled in Anita, Iowa; and, (3) does this stamp have any particular value beyond the $3 or so assigned to it by Scott?

Sorry. My question left a lot to be desired. LOL

I know about Ericsson's accomplishments and the impact he had on naval warfare and naval propulsion in general, and I am familiar with all the usual info on the stamp itself. I even wrote a paper in college re the battle between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia (built on the hull of the previously scuttled USS Merrimack).

What I am inquiring about is the precancel. Was it common to precancel commemoratives? Is this (Anita, IA) an uncommon precancel? Usually a small PO would not precancel unless there was a demand from a large mailer in the area. Anyone have any idea of corprations or companies that would have been located near Anita, IA in the 1920s? (Anita is in the middle of the state, about half way between Des Moines and Omaha, NE)

Thanks,

Bobby

re: Desire info on precancel from Anita, Iowa

Bobby,

Regarding the precancel itself: the 2007 edition of the Precancel Stamp Society's Town and Type Catalog of the US and Territories lists just three precancel types for Anita, Iowa. From the posted image, it appears to be #547 which has a listed value of 50c. (Block caps 3.8 mm high between 1mm bars that are 10 mm apart - it isn't even close to the other types listed).

So it does not appear to be an exceptionally valuable precancel but it is a nice example.
