hi,

I apologize if this topic or question comes up frequently, i am new to stamporama and wasn't able to figure out which discussion topic area to ask this question. I have received a few modern (they were probably issued or produced in 1990s or 2000s) from Batum that also appear to be CTO. The stamp image topic appears to be of various types of mushrooms. Did post USSR region of Batum issue these postage stamps for valid use as postage in the region or are these forgeries that someone sitting in a basement in Chicago with printing press equipment is spewing out and these stamps are getting disseminated worldwide? In looking on the web, i wasn't able to find a clear answer except that the nation of Georgia doesn't recognize stamps produced from its breakaway regions of which the city of Batum appears to be a part of.

thank you in advance for your help!

IMO Batum has always been a collecting area fraught with fakes, forgeries, and fantasy stamps.

Given you did not post an image of the specific stamps, it may prove difficult for the SOR crew to
provide a solid answer.

As for info resources, Dr. Ray Ceresa is considered by many to be a valued Batum resource/expert. A Google will reveal scads of articles, postings, etc.

Re more contemporary Batum material recommend you refer to Delcampe, which I believe has marketed similar material over the years. Perhaps others will chime in to either confirm or correct my recollection: Wasn’t concerns re the validity of contemporary Batum material one of the catalysts for Delcampe’s revision of its “sales description policy”?

Lastly, do you have an address for the alleged Chicago basement? And
by any chance is it furnished?

Hi crapgame70,

I guess your stamps look this (or similar):

Image Not Found

These and all other modern Batum labels are bogus.

Batum and its region, the Autonomous Republic of Adjaria/Adjara, are still very much part of Georgia.
