Hey guys!

My 11 yrs old daughter likes collecting stamps. I saw an auction on ebay and they are offering high value stamps that she does not have in her collection (that big whale is pretty impressive! geez!). It would make for a great Christmas gift for her!

I have no idea how much this lot is worth and what would constitute a 'good deal' or a 'bad deal'. I am on a very tight budget, so I have to be careful with these....

Any advice? I added an image of what is included in the lot.

Awaiting your advice!

re: Seeking advice on stamp purchase for Daughter

Well, I can't comment on the cost aspect, but these are to my mind very attractive stamps. They are engraved by Jorge Peral, a leading Canadian engraver - possibly computer assisted, and the whale is certainly something else! Actually Peral was originally Mexican - mainly active in engraving banknotes. In 1999 he did a beautiful stamp for Canada showing a dove, and he also did a couple showing native Americans at the time of the arrival of the white men.

I collect engraved stamps, and I was glad to get some of these for my own collection. I don't have the whale though!

I think your daughter would have some lovely stamps for her Canada collection, and more to look out for. Another great Canadian engraver is Silas Allen - he did the wildlife series in the 1950s - not at all expensive and very attractive looking.

Best - Neville

Ritz,
You might want to consider finding an inexpensive used, off-paper horde and a one or two year old reference book. With minimal investment, your daughter would have the fun of "discovering" each stamp and would also benefit from the research aspect of reading the reference material for each. You are to be commended for assisting your daughters interest in stamps and showing her that there is so much more to life than twitter, snapchat and Instagram. You sound like a great dad. All the best to you and your daughter!

d1stamper: Am I allowed to post the link? Some forums have strict rules about that... and I don't want to be banned for trying to help my kid lol

ernieinjax - Good advice! I already purchased a used Canadian stamp catalog for her to use... hehe the 'new' ones are a bit costly :P And yeah, I'm saddened at the crazy amount of time wasted by youth on electronics toys.... But that's a discussion for another thread!

@RiTz21: Links to other web sites are fine. Here's the one you posted, formatted for this discussion group: eBay Canadian wildlife stamps.

I'd like to add that our sponsor, Roy Lingen's Discount Stamp Shop, would be an excellent source of stamps for your daughter.

@sheepshanks

My Daughter has received your letter today!!

She spent at least half an hour checking them - She was amazed at the size of those whales! (geez you can't even put that on an envelope! lol)- She does not have many stamps passed 1998 so almost all of them were new to her!

A few pictures - many THANKS Vic for helping her collection out!!!

Glad they arrived ok, was not sure with the postal problems at present. When the strike is over I have a couple of other bits to send but being heavier will need packages.
Good to see her looking pleased, thanks for posting the photos.

Edit, just noticed they sharpied the envelope, despite the clear postmarks.

RiTz21 - Once our Canadian Postal Strike is over and mail is moving again, I would be more than happy to send your daughter some of the earlier Canadian wildlife stamps, plus some of the more recent ones.

If she is interested in receiving more stamps, please message me and I'd be very glad to help her out with her collection.

The sheets of the Moose stamps and the Whale stamps are full inscription block sheets.

Be very careful handling those stamps if you try to soak them off the paper, as those particular sheets have a tendency to separate at the perforations once immersed in water.

Beautiful sheets! Those are keepers!!!

Oh indeed now that you mention it. Do you think this is related to their strike? (i.e. they do this on purpose?) What I noticed in the first picture, is that we can see her missing tooth she lost a couple of days ago! HEHE

Really? Hmmm I'll let her know about this... Perhaps it would be best to leave them 'as is' to avoid that problem...! Thanks for the heads-up!

I have hundreds of Canadian used that I would be happy to send. Also, a great deal of material from other countries. I have a grand-daughter who was briefly interested in coin collecting but the interest faded quite quickly. So, if this is a passing fancy, there is no point in diving in; but I am really interested in helping young enthusiastic collectors; so, if she is really keen, I would be really happy to help her along. I well remember how hard it was as a youngster to acquire stamps for my collection. Let me know.

Yeah it is understandable in this day & age that young-lings are more attracted to electronics and internet. I try to 'balance' this hobby between her exposure to electronics & her studies. It's been one year now since she started (my initial post is HERE

@Rgbrito:

"I have Cuban postage stamps that could add to your daughter's collection."

As I mentioned in the PM you sent, she likes animals - but specially HORSES! While she's probably too young to focus on "the world" AND, as NBStamper infers, interest can be lost if overwhelmed, I am pretty sure she would love a horse-themed 'side' collection!

ok I decided to put the question to her... I asked her if she would like to have stamps of animals - and in particular horses... hehe I was a bit surprised by her answer. She said "yes" about 12 times! I told her that she would have to build her own album... without hesitation, she replied; "Can I start designing the pages now?" ok, WOW lol. I guess she does digs horses lol (She likes Cats almost as much as horses...)

Hi RiTz21

It seems all young girls love horses, my daughters did, my eldest daughter (one of 3) loved playing marbles and always had to borrow her friends marbles, so I bought her a bag of 50, mind you she was also 10 at the time, with those marbles which at the time was her prized possession grew to 2,000 within a two year period, boys were reluctant to play marbles with her (I wonder why).

Now 40 she just recently gave the very large collection to her 10 year old son.

I have horses on Australian stamps and would like to send them to your daughter.

That's a beautiful story!! I've never seen the game associated with marbles, but I for one sure would have liked to try it!!

As for Horse stamps, I'm sure she would be happy to create an "Australia" page for her album!

As I mentioned in my previous post, my daughter had already started creating her 'Horsy' stamp album. Here is a photo of her design for the Canada page (well, the only page she has so far lol)

Hi RiTz21

I'll be sending every horse issue your way, from race horses to equestrian races, wild horses to work horses and horses in the military etc. They will be posted on Tuesday, December 4.

I'll also make sure that there will be horses on the envelope.

Here is how marbles are played. Belinda played marbles in the back yard, footpath and the hardest of all - in the gutter. It is always played on a dirt ground or cement and the winner claims all the marbles knocked out of the ring.

I taught her how to play marbles and the secret in properly holding them, at the end she beat me.

That's nice of you! Thanks!! User ikeyPikey sent me a suggestion through email and it's a good one: He mentioned that there are printable pages for animals (including horses) that one can download and print! So I checked them out; pretty nice, but I had a complementary idea: Why not have the FLAG of the country, PLUS an excuse to draw at the same time on each of the pages!! So I built a template (for Canada, but I'll make one for other countries as needed). For the title, I used an 'empty' font that needs to be drawn into to give some color Happy
Kira was excited and you can see her at work on it:
Image Not Found

Here is the result - note that the page is a bit dark as there wasn't enough light... but the page is really White!

Image Not Found

I was able to place a grid on the page so her ... aim... would be better than with a non-grid page lol Do notice in the image that she decided to draw a 'horse' shape within the word Horse in the title!!

Nice!!! I loved dexterity games when I was a kid, so I would have loved that game! hehe I guess it's not a thing in Canada...

P.S. If anyone would like the Template I made for stamps, it's a simple Word Doc, easily shared - and modifiable! It can be easilly adapted to anything...! (and the flag deleted if not needed) Just let me know!

Hi RiTz21

Thanks for the info, I'll take the envelope to the local post office on Saturday morning and post it, The person who gave me the outdated news was from the GPO, I'll send a message to confirm the envelope being sent on the way.

Here is a list of the stamps being sent in the first envelope.

1978 - Melbourne Cup winners: 20 cents Tulloch; 25 cents Bernborough; 50 cents Phar Lap; 55 cents Peter Pan.

1986 - 33 cents Brumbies (wild horses); 80 cents Mustering (rider on horse chasing cattle); 90 cents Show Jumping; $1.00 Australian Pony (girl riding small pony).

2010 - 150th Anniversary of the Melbourne Cup, all are 60 cent stamps: Saintly - 1996 winner; Phar Lap - 1930 winner; Carbine - 1890 winner; Solid gold trophy from the 2010 Melbourne Cup (part of the set).

2014 - Equestrian Competition, all are 70 cent stamps: Dressage; Pony Club; Polo Crosse; Show Jumping; Cross-Country.

2018 - $1.00 showing the racehorse WINX (the horse won 26 consecutive races when the stamp was issued, since then the animal has won 3 more races in consecutive order). WINX is not a long distance runner so it was not entered into the Melbourne Cup which is a 3200 meter race which is just under 2 miles (1.98 miles).

2015 Cats - Doesn't give the name of the breeds, only their names, all are 70 cent stamps: Charo; Bubu; Sweetie; Cato; Briony.

There are 23 stamps in total.

re: Seeking advice on stamp purchase for Daughter

Hello from Sunny, Warm Florida:
It is wonderful to see a young stamp collector who takes HER stamp collecting seriously and has fun with her hobby. Children love solving and finding solutions to challenges. Kira's idea of creating an album and implementing skillfully such a difficult task deserves praise and encouragement.

A philatelic anecdote from Robert's classroom experience:

BENEFITS OF COLLECTING STAMPS: #1

When Robert was about ten he had been collecting postage stamps for a little while. One day, during a Geography lesson, the teacher pointed to the map hanging on the wall. The teacher asked the class to answer a seemingly easy question: What is the fastest way to go from southern Australia to Chile? Every student said that you must go West. Robert, on the other hand, said: One must travel East from Southern Australia to reach Chile. The teacher congratulated Robert. That was a glorious moment for the budding stamp collector. His hobby helped him find far away countries, know their names, and was aware that the Earth was not flat as the map on the wall indicated. His Geography knowledge stemmed from his stamp collecting hobby. And Robert remembers that moment to this day.

If only one could travel back in time, and introduce Young Robert to The Great Circle Theorem.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great-circle_navigation

Executive Summary: find the line that passes thru both points and bisects the globe. That's your shortest path, and is why flights from, say, Dubai to Miami pass over London.

Due east, due shmeast.

Cheers,

re: Seeking advice on stamp purchase for Daughter

Actually, paper maps can be deceiving when it comes to determining directions between two points on a sphere. My main hobby for a few decades was shortwave radio.

Those radio waves travel in a straight line around the globe from transmitter to a given receiver. Directional receiving antennas can dramatically enhance reception from specific directions when they are oriented properly. Any radio enthusiast knows that the vast majority of maps are useless in determining antenna orientation for best reception from a specific location on the planet. In order to establish the line that represents the shortest distance between two points on planet Earth, we need an azimuthal equidistant map. (There may be other similar map projection types, but this is the one I know.)

I learned about such maps when in junior high and several years later left my cartography professor virtually speechless when I created an azimuthal equidistant map centered on my hometown for my final class project. He asked if he could keep it as an example to show future classes. I agreed on the condition he provide me with a high quality photograph of my map. He agreed and I still have that photo here somewhere.

Since I couldn't find that photo to scan this evening, I found a site online where I could create such a map centered on Sydney, Australia. Any line radiating out from the Sydney location on this map is the shortest distance to any point along that line. Plus, the direction of a given line, in degrees, is identified around the map perimeter.

The primary problem with such maps is the land mass distortions as you near the map's perimeter. It's a special purpose map and has limited application.

You can create your own map for any major city at https://ns6t.net/azimuth/azimuth.html.

Great Map. It's nice to see Antarctica closely resembling its true shape, rather than seeing it looking like some stretched behemoth at the bottom of most world maps.

Query: I am thinking of getting this to my daughter for xmas... is this a reasonable price? I find it quite pretty and I'm sure Kira would think so too!! ALSO, it would complete one of he pages, and she loves it when that happens: it means she adds stickers to the page itself! HEHE

What do you think?

You realize it is used, right? For that price you can buy a mint one.

It's a tricky listing "CDS" and cancel barely visible in the scan.

CDS is the abbreviation for "Circular Date Stamp"

The stamps you want to buy for your daughter is quite cute, but I believe Roy is correct that a mint one would be around the same price, providing you can find one, if not, then a cancelled one is the way to go.

Why is it that girls write better than boys, when I was 12 my teacher said my writing was messy and a lost cause until a girl from my class showed me at lunchtime (and there were a few of those lunchtime lessons) before I was able to write neat.

I still write neat to this very day, but I draw the line at using little hearts when dotting the "i".

Hi RiTz21

I'm relieved that Kira received the envelope, they do look nice, there are a few more horses, dogs, baby Australian native animals (including baby marsupials), frogs, very colourful butterflies, colourful beetles etc. somewhere, I'll let you know sometime in the New Year when they will be sent, seeing that I can now send stamps to Canada, it may not take so long this time.

@Roy

Kira has received the Souvenir sheet you sent!!
It's such a beautiful sheet! (she used the protector you included to... well, protect it!)

This is the 5th souvenir sheet in her 1973 to 2000 album AND it completed one of her pages, so she was very happy with that (and as usual, she placed a sticker to denote that!)
That album has these other four souvenir sheets:
* Capex 1978
* The flags of 1979
* Canada Day of 1984
* Exploration of Canada 1986

She also has more recent souvenir sheets - These are:
* The Canada-China jointed issue of 2005 (#2123b)
* Endangered Species series 2 of 3 from 2007 (#2229)
* International Polar Year 2007-2008 (#2205b)
* (used) Year of the Tiger 2010 (#2349)
* (used) Beneficial insects 2010 (#2410a)
* (used) Year of the Horse 2014 (#2700)
* (used) 150 Years of Photography (#2757)
* (used) Love your Pet 2015 (#2829)

I have yet to print the pages after year 2000.
For example, the year 2001, she has only 9 commemorative stamps and I am afraid that if I print these out, she'll be a bit discouraged with the many 'blanks' she would see for that year.. she has a ton of blanks for 2000 as it is). Also, I do not have the PDF for 2012+...

There sure is a lot of souvenir sheets... I noticed that Canada Post went NuTz with the Millennium, where they produced a ton of these... geez!
If it were up to me, I'd print ONLY Star Trek souvenir sheets HEHEHE

Many thanks for helping Kira out with her collecting and Happy New Year!!

Hi RiTz21

What an innovative way to create album pages. I am still going through my boxes of stamps looking for items that Kira might find interesting; rearing 3 daughters of my own helps.

I sent another envelope last week, this time with souvenir sheets and I think an FDC or two, one souvenir sheet is about pond life (Lisa, my youngest who had just turned 40, was born on January 8, 1979, she had a large green tree frog as a pet for 5 years, yet she was petrified of large beetles), and there is another souvenir sheet with Australian dinosaurs.

Just a little bit of trivia, Lisa was born on Elvis Presley's birthday, and her friend Leesa (I thought the difference in name spelling was amazing) was born a year apart to the day after his death, August 16, 1978.

We have to give Canada homage for issuing the world's first Christmas stamp in 1898.

Hi Rob!

Kira received your letter a couple of days ago - a few pics below! These souvenir sheets are very beautiful! Kira placed them in a .. hmmm I dunno how it's called - it is an album with cardboard pages, separated by some glossy transparent sheet, and each page has little translucent pockets to put stamps in...

Elvis Presley - geez quite the coincidences! We happened to be on vacation when it happened (I was just a kid) but I do recall that it kinda messed up our vacation - my mom was a big fan of his, and cried Sad

Christmas stamp - wow nice! I didn't know that, cool! Big Grin

THANKS once again for sending Kira such beautiful stamps!! (and YES, that is snow in the window behind Kira!! If only we could ship some of our frigid AIR to help cool off Australia... )

re: Seeking advice on stamp purchase for Daughter

Hi RiTz21

I knew Kira would like the souvenir sheets, the album you are referring to is a stock book, I bought myself a camera cabinet and turned it into a stamp cabinet as it has a built-in humidifier and temperature control gauges and the door has a rubber airtight seal and is lockable.

Some of the stamps I have are extremely valuable and need protection (my avatar is one of them), in the process of going through other stamps I have I noticed I have quite a few doubles, triples etc, and I am still sorting through what I can send to Kira.

I may end up sending the lot in one package and she can have a field day looking through them (my favourite is the flowers and bee in the gutter).

I reckon every-one on the planet that knew of Elvis Presley will be able to recollect what they were doing on the day he dies. The week he died I remember nearly all TV stations ran a week long Elvis Presley movie marathon and no matter what radio station you turned to it was playing an Elvis song.

I've never seen snow, this time of the year we experience temperatures as high as 40 - 45 degrees Celsius, in Western Australia just over a month back the temperature reached nearly 50 degrees Celsius.

We do have heavy storms, cyclones and heavy flooding, it must be freezing cold outside your window.

My fiancee is from the Ukraine and she mentioned that the cold in her hometown Lvov can be as low as -25 to -30 degrees Celsius and she used to go to school in that cold.

I may take you up on sending the snow to Australia, it is so hot that using a fan will only circulate hot air throughout the house, and going to Bondi Beach (which is only a 10 minute walk from where I live) is so overcrowded it looks like a "Where's Willie" from above.

The beach can hold up to 40,000, one hot day there was an estimated 90,000 - 100,000 people on the beach.

@Rob
Book: Ah a 'stock book'!

Camera cabinet: Oh my!! That's a special place for your stamps!!

Elvis: Well, not the youngsters.. it's funny I have a D&D game on each Friday nights, and half our group are 'old', and the other half are young. When we make references to anything before 1990, only the old guys laugh, and the youngling look at us with puzzled looks!! LOL

Weather: Well, we don't have cyclones, hurricanes or flooding here (at least, not yet) - Montréal is probably too north to get those. Very cols is rare, and when we get below -30C, it's with the windchill factored in! We do't get any beaches though... Sad

@sheepshanks
Kira received your letter a couple of days ago!! She's the one getting the mail from our communal mailboxes, and boy, was she happy to see that letter with those souvenir sheets on them!! here are a couple of pictures of the event - Many thanks for sending those!!!

I didn't know Kira's birthday is next month, when and how old? My partner and I will send over something purely Australian (no, it won't be a boomerang, as they are made overseas, and a proper boomerang isn't sleek and decorated, the decorated type are made for tourists).

What Victoria and I have in mind is authentic and made by aborigines.

You mentioned playing D&D, is that Dungeons and Dragons? I could never figure that game out, the baby of the family Michael (17th born, just turned 50) is an expert at it.

@Sheepshanks
I was worried when I saw the scotch tape on these nice souvenir sheets... I though they would ruin them!! Kira and I removed then very slowly and carefully, and they didn't do any damage to the souvenir sheets!! *whew* ! I was even wondering if it was special tape that didn't harm stamps... (I know *my* scotch Tape would rip them apart if taken off...!)

#Rob1956
Kira's birthday was a week ago... sorry I didn't see your reply until today Sad {I wish this site would send Notifications of new messages...!}

She's now 12! Earlier tonight, she soaked some stamps her aunt gave her (at her work, she gets a couple of stamps each week) - Boy stamps are HARD to come by these days.

Yes I mentioned D&D... I've been playing it for a long time too (like 30 years). I'll send you a PM about it... Happy

And it's not hard to imagine that 'fancy painted' boomerangs are for tourists...!

Just came out of hospital, will have a little rest then my fiancee and I will find an authentic aboriginal item/s for her, I can assure you she will most likely be the only person in Canada to have one.

Real aboriginal designs and craftsmanship are very beautiful to see.

Hi RiTz21

Feeling much better now, needed to have a rest after spending a miserable time in the isolation ward from a very serious bout of influenza. Soon Victoria and I will be heading for the Aboriginal artefacts shop to buy the present we promised Kira; it's a little belated but it will be well worth the wait.

And have no worries about Kira! She's about to finish her Primary school (ouch I feel old..!) Next September, she's going to High School... She's going for her Graduation photo tomorrow at school.

Stamp wise, it's been quiet. Her aunt gives her stamps from time to time, but we have so very few stamps on envelopes, it's a bit sad.

Hi RiTz21

The kids here do not finish until a week before Christmas, and it wasn’t until recently that 12 year olds no longer were primary school children, but first year high school students (grade 8). I felt old when my daughters reached high school.

I can send FDCs (First Day Covers), some recent covers issued are a set of Australian Fauna featuring the Galah, Red Kangaroo, Tasmanian Devil and the Blue-Tongued Lizard.

The next is a set of stamps titled Sustainable Fish, featuring the Patagonian Tooth fish (and Bird exclusion device), Blue Grenadier (and Seal excluder device), Tiger Flathead (and Mesh to reduce by-catch), this is the information found on the stamps.

There is also the Queen's Birthday. Anzac Day and the International Year of Indigenous Languages.

A set of stamps were issued on May 7th titled Flightless Birds with the image of the Emu, Southern Cassowary and the Little Penguin.

The Cassowary is the world’s most dangerous bird and can easily kill a man; it’s got me beat why a man in the US kept one as a pet, the bird turned on him and killed him, I read about this last week. These birds can stand as high as 2 metres and weigh as much as 58.5 kg.

I will send the covers on Monday. The artefact will be sent soon after, as it is over 14,000 km from Australia to Canada the skill of sending it will be in the art of packaging the item. The item will be hand painted and no two designs are the same.

hehe goes to show how different school systems exists on our big earth!

She placed the very beautiful stamps you gave her into a stock album (see image) - I always found Canadian stamps very beautiful in general, but I am realizing that Australian stamps are pretty good looking, if not even better than Canadian stamps..! If I were 10 years old again, I would so much start collecting Dinosaur stamps! LOL

At that age, my mum got me a book that had a lot of Dinosaurs landscapes, and you could purchase packs of stickers with Dinosaurs on them: You would stick the various Dinosaurs/stickers in the scenes and try to get all of them (exchanging the missing stickers with friends...) - Geez I loved that book!

Cassowary - Indeed I saw that article about the man who was killed by that bird...! OUCH! That's one scary bird! And Australia sure has weird fauna... Taz devils and Dalahs? HEHE

re: Seeking advice on stamp purchase for Daughter

Hi R

It sure is a different system comparing how schools in different countries work, I know that in the USA school terms finish early because of the snowfall; here in Australia it is hot at the end of the year.

In some parts of Australia, Rockhampton in North Queensland, I spent a few years there, the temperature in the summer can reach 40 degrees Celsius (107 degrees Fahrenheit) which is common and though it is uncommon the temperature had risen to 45 degrees (113 degrees), one can actually see the tar from the road melt into the gutter and a person can literally fry an egg on the footpath, which I have seen kids do out of interest.

That particular heat killed many small birds and there are signs that warn people not to walk barefoot and to wear a hat or stay inside.

The Tasmanian devil is a cute little animal until it is picked up and then the biting starts, they are an endangered species; when my father was a child he lived near a bush in Tasmania and he used to say that every summer’s night one could hear the noise of the Tasmanian Devil and Tasmanian Tiger.

The Tasmanian tiger (Thylacine) is now extinct as a result of farmers and hunters mistaking them to be responsible for killing livestock; I have never seen one as the last thylacine died in Taronga Zoo in 1933; there have been recent sightings of one but never confirmed.

It’s hard to believe that Australia is home to 21 of the world’s 25 most deadly snakes and has the most lethal species than in any other part of the world, but it is still quite safe to visit or live here; as the majority of the deadly species live inland and the majority of Australians live in the coastal area.

I have lived inland and in many coastal areas and have only seen 4 species that is considered dangerous in my life, a person would need to be very unlucky to be confronted by a dangerous animal, reptile or marine life.

Only 3 months ago it was mentioned on the news that a Chinese tourist picked up a blue-ringed octopus and his girlfriend took photos of him handling it until a resident told him to drop the octopus as it is the most poisonous marine animal in the world and if bitten he will die within minutes as there is no antivenin for it (The blue-ringed octopus, despite its small size, it can fit in the palm of an adult hand carries enough venom to kill twenty-six adult humans within minutes).

The Galah is a crazy bird and very noisy, but is seldom seen in Sydney, though the Cockatoo is very common, only last week there were at least 50 of those destructive and very noisy squawking birds in our tree.

I will be sending the FDCs after I get the newest cover just released titled “Native Bees”.

Hi R

Does Kira collect 3D stamps, as I found a set of them, about 12 mint unhinged from Bhutan (they're vintage cars) and each stamp looks quite stunning; pity I cannot put them on-line as it will not show up as 3D.

I have included some non-3D stamps of cars from St. Vincent (SS) and single stamps from the Solomon Islands and a booklet of self-adhesive Australian cars as well.

There are a few Australian FDCs plus their single stamps. The colours of the animals and bees really make them stand out, they look more vibrant in colour when they are in front of you than on a screen.

Tomorrow my partner and I are going to visit the indigenous artefacts shop, the biggest challenge is to send it safely, I'm quite sure there is going to be a lot of high denomination stamps on it (I'll insist they do).

@Ritz21, if you are looking for a quick way to find dates and information on the horse stamps I sent, have you tried using Colnect.com? You can filter by the themes, countries and time frames to see a list of stamps. Hi RiTz21

My partner and I looked high and low for a unique indigenous artefact, it took some time but we finally found one, The bowl isn't too small or too big, it was hand-made and hand painted, it is the most beautiful item I have ever seen.

We are currently figuring out how to send it safely to Kira, hope she likes her belated birthday present, the bowl is unique.

Hi RiTz21

I agree, it is all hand painted and crafted, I will also enclose the stamps showing Flightless Birds, Australian Native bees and Freshwater Crayfish, all in bright vivid colour.

I will have the items sent with a tracking number, when it is posted I will PM you the tracking number.

@Rob1956
I gave her the task of picking up mail.. hehehe She really loves getting stuff in the mail. I am so saddened that 99.5% of all the mail we get are prepaid envelopes.

Would you like some definitive from Canada?

Kira's aunt gets envelopes at her work and keeps the stamps for her... almost all are definitive though (I would estimate that she gets 20 definitive for each commemorative stamps she receives...)

Definitive stamps should be made illegal! So at least if you're getting a stamp, it's not one of those! LOL

With definitive stamps, at least someone is using stamps. Canadian definitives are notorious for different types and perforation and tagging varieties depending on whether they are sheets or booklet stamps. Some of those are worth a little bit of money. Giving them a look might be a good way to teach her a little about identifying stamps, if she wants to expand out a little to that.

Hi R

I wouldn't mind at all about getting some Canadian definitives. Currently we are trying to figure out some safe way of sending the bowl to Kira. Victoria and I will be going to the post office tomorrow to find some way to send it safely.

It will be tracked and as mentioned in a previous post, I will send the tracking number via your email.

It is a unique bowl and the packing will need to be very secure before sending it to Kira.

You are correct, but seen through the eyes of a 12 years old, commemorative stamps are much more attractive! (and 99% of the time, larger!)

"I wouldn't mind at all about getting some Canadian definitive"

Those she got aplenty - specially with her aunt giving her the letters she gets at work!!

Want older definitive as well? She got a bunch of those too. It's the commemorative that are harder to get for her (well, everyone I guess)! Be sure to email me your postal address...!

Bonjour Kira et Richard,

I have been following this thread practically from the beginning of your post: "Seeking advice..." And it is fascinating! It should be required reading for all collectors and those who love reading the daily posts on the myriad subjects about stamp collecting.

Kira's interest in collecting postage stamps is definitely broadening her horizons, cultural awareness, discipline, organizational skills, world views, etc., etc., etc. Also the adult direction, help and, yes, interest make the whole experience even more beneficial. We are observing in all these posts a veritable teaching and learning experience moment.

Congratulations,

votre ami de la Floride du Sud,

robert

I will be sending Kira a small gift for her growing collection.

If you want send a bowl in the mail, bury it in popcorn ... those styrofoam nuggets, otherwise known as packing peanuts which i reluctantly throw in the landfill by the cord every year simply because what else can i do with them ...

Hi nlroberts1961

Assuming you are mentioning real popcorn. As border security is very strict these days (bio-security), unpackaged popped corn (it has natural oils and popcorn absorbs moisture) can carry micro-organisms and may be considered by the health department a risk to the Canadian environment, the rare bowl may never have arrived, and if the package had to be opened for investigation, the risk of chipping or breaking would be great.

The contents (popcorn) would need to be declared, and as the popcorn is used as packaging it may be a violation of the terms in the declaration.

When the box entered Canada I was given a notification that the box passed border security, if it had popcorn I doubt that the acceptance of the box onto Canadian soil would have been a successful one.

I have read that popcorn was used for packages travelling within the country during the 1990s, but not for exportation, as it could violate international bio-security laws.

So using popcorn for packaging an item may not be a good idea. Using large air pockets is safe for the environment and is re-usable.

I wasn't quite sure, but there have been companies who actually used real popcorn, that's what threw me off.

At first that is what I thought, the dots between made it a little confusing, I think my age is catching up to me (always throwing that line when I misinterpret).

Hello Bonhomme Richard and Kira,

The pleasure is all mine!

Shucks, I would've liked seein' snow on the ground, covering the trees...

The plants are quite interesting and their window location is perfect. I hope they don't despair seeing all that snow just outside.

I am very happy I brought a smile to both of you: the Dragons set I had wanted to send for a while. They are really exquisitely crafted stamps (for the USA!). I hope Kira liked the zoological stamps of life under the ocean... Next time I'll send the lenticular dinosaur set issued a couple of months ago... I'll check at the post office branch in town.

Well, stay warm and keep on working on those stamps. Thanks for the pics!

re: Seeking advice on stamp purchase for Daughter

Hi Ritz21

Being a herb, basil needs to be grown in the full sun and the roots need to spread freely like all herbs. Being in a small pot restricts the freedom of the roots (root bound) and causes water to build-up in the pot (regardless of the water escape holes in the pot), the water will eventually cause root rot and the plant will die (the soil must always be prodded every now and then).

Of course there are people who actually succeed growing them by placing the basil in a larger pot (not too large) and water them about twice a week and not to saturate the soil. The plant will need to get the sun by leaving the pot outside in the sun, if it is too cold, having the pot near the window is a good place, but it cannot be near the window full time as it will not look too good.

I spent my teen years on a large produce farm growing herbs, fruit, vegetables and rearing milking cows; not to forget what my mother taught me as a child keeping indoor plants.

PS: Victoria and I will be travelling to the Indigenous Arts Council tomorrow to find information for Kira.

Also, you have to harvest the herb. Just don't let it grow. Harvesting promotes new growth.

Wow thanks for the tips!!
I will try again with a new batch and see if I can do better this time around, armed with your botanical tips!!

On another matter!!
I received a Promotion from EBAY gifting my account with $5 coupon! Meaning I can by anything and apply that 5$!

I was thinking of getting Kira some used stamps!! I took pictures of her album (the one from 2001 to 2019) and I am wondering if I can find a lot that has some of the missing stamps from those years... I am not sure where to put up those images (19 pages/images) (I am not sure if this is allowed on this forum, so best I ask 1st - 19 images is a lot...) - I was thinking you sharp eyed stamp expert could help me locate the perfect Lot to maximize her missing stamps!

Ideas? The coupon expires on the 24th of November...!

THANKS!!

I am not seeing a link to Ads... !?

So what you're saying is that I could open an AD, asking for someone to post a batch of (missing) used stamps for $5 on Ebay, then buy from them on eBay?

That would certainly work for me!! (and best ppl here get the $ then a random eBayer...!

ok I decided to let Kira decide WHAT she wanted on eBay with that coupon!

She selected the Titanic Souvenir Sheet from 2012!!
They had discussed this at her school and she knew about that tragedy...

Also, I am excited to report that by pure luck (!?), I stumbled upon the missing Canadian album pages to print! I had up to 2011, but I found 2012 to 2018 on a site! I guess 2019 won't be available until the year ends Big Grin

I now have many pages to print for her album! lol more work for me!!

Hello,
Very interesting that Kira was told about the Titanic tragedy in school.
Canada was very important in the rescue of many who survived the sinking of the Titanic and also, most importantly, in the care of the countless victims who perished on that fateful date. Halifax, Nova Scotia, residents not only helped the survivors, but also found a fitting resting place for many who died in the cold waters of the Atlantic.
On our visit to Nova Scotia we paid our respects to the victims whose remains yet rest on Canadian soil. Ours was a most touching and emotional visit, and we thanked in our own private ways the efforts and succor provided by Canadians to total strangers. Those who perished were identified much later, and yet Nova Scotia did not shirk away from a human catastrophe of such magnitude.

@Rgbrito: Interesting comment about Halifax...!

And it reminded me - I saw that Kira had a stamp about Halifax.

I examined it and it si about the 110th anniversary of the tragedy that befell that city in 1917... geez that must have been horrible for the people there.

I have found there are many videos about that incident and I'll show one or 2 to Kira on the weekend... in relation to her stamp!!

Nobody told ME about that when I was a kid...

R
P.S. Her eBay souvenir sheet (purchased with a $5 eBay rebate) is on its way...! I'll make sure SHE picks up mail this week Happy

re: Seeking advice on stamp purchase for Daughter

Five years after the Titanic tragedy, in 1917, a catastrophic explosion devastated the North end of the Port City of Halifax, Nova Scotia. A munitions ship, the Mont Blanc, loaded with explosives and gasoline destined for the war in Europe, collided with a Norwegian vessel that was headed for New York. The Mont Blanc ignited immediately after the collision, and was thrown towards the shore. Unfortunately, onlookers and residents, not realizing the danger, were caught by an explosion of unequaled power and intensity. Nearly 2000 died, 9000 were injured, 200 suffered horrible eye injuries. Nearly 2000 structures--homes, businesses, schools--were destroyed. A mangled clock, preserved at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, indicated the exact time of the explosion: just before 9:05 in the morning.

News of the tragedy traveled fast. Boston, Massachusetts, mobilized immediately sending trains and ships to Halifax with doctors, nurses, volunteers, medicine, supplies and financial resources. All the Canadian provinces mobilized as well. Countless benefits begat by this horrific catastrophe were advanced care for traumatic injuries, pediatric trauma, and eye injury therapies. Many of the injured were children. Also, the relations between Canada and the United States of America were forever strengthened. Every single year, for more than one hundred years, Boston receives a Christmas tree from the Nova Scotia forests that is displayed in Boston Commons.

In October, 2018, we visited the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and observed the recovered artifacts from that fateful tragedy of December 9, 1917.

@nlroberts1961 - People in those days wouldn't believe how fast news travel in the information age... hehe

@sheepshanks - Nice story... Such a tragedy :|

@Rgbrito - I always get some ... knot in my belly when I read stories like that one you posted.... Must be my Emotional side taking over my logical side for a few moments... I needed to wipe a tear reading it. I hope I'm not being weird sharing this. Stories of tragedy followed by people coming together always has a very strong impact on me... Perhaps it is my "Star Trek" + 'hopeful' side popping up. HEHE if I'd collect stamps, I'd collect Star Trek stamps because of this! LOL The used Unitrade catalog of 2017 has a full page of Trek stuff on the cover... I didn't tell Kira, but that's half the reason I purchased it for her on eBay some time ago! LOL) - The recent Canadian Star Trek stamps are pretty NICE! I spied a few in Kira's album Big Grin

R
P.S. Seems the 4th Star Trek movie is back and should be produced with the crew of the Kelvin TimeLine! AND with Star Trek: Picard coming up next month, this is a good time to be a Trekkie/Trekker or whatever fans are called these days Winking
@Linus - ok that was interesting...! GEEZ!

There are so many lessons to be learned from History...

Looking at the USA Star Trek stamps, they are pretty! I checked the Star Trek stamps that Kira has, and they use real photos of the actors in their character.

I put up images from her 2001-2019 album here: https://www.flickr.com/gp/185688801@N03/7e6ALy

You can see the Star Trek stamps she has: 5 in 2017 (Captains: Archer, Kirk, Sisco and Janeway, plus Captain Picard in the lower area.

For the year 2016, she only has Dr. 'Bones' McCoy. Spock is mia lol

Babylon 5, one of the best Sc-Fi ever on TV, was supposed to only last as long as it did. J. Michael Strazynski created it as a novel with a beginning and end. There are prequel movies, and a couple of spinoffs that are not all that great.

The Canadian Star Trek stamps are fantastic. The US issue was disappointing. I guess they didn't want to pay the royalties.

Kira received your Xmas package!!

The X-mas wrapped gift, she already placed under the tree (I didn't have to tell her NOT to open is right away! LOL) - The souvenir sheets have already been 'soaked'!! Wow thank you for all these - I don't think she had any of these!! Once she has placed them in her album, I'll update her online version once she has placed them.

P.S. NOIIICE the Star Trek card (next to last image - it is a postcard, right? Or is it real stamps? I'm not sure! But it's quite unique with its 3D effects/hologram!)

P.S.2: In the first image, you can see some of the Paintings she made! She loves to paint... (and paint all her clothing.. LOL)

Did Kira paint those? Victoria when she was a child was a prodigy artist in the Ukraine some of her artwork where displayed in the Ukraine and Japan, she was between the ages of 5-7 years old at the time (we still have some of them), she now has a few degrees, one of those degrees is in art and art theory which she has a bachelor degree with distinction.

We actually thought an adult painted them, especially the trees directly behind her. Victoria said they are very, very good and that Kira is a talented artist, pity the other canvases are out of view.

Victoria also said that if Kira wants to, she should continue with her art, she can only get better.

@Sheepshanks:
I updated Kira's 2001-2019 album with the stamps you sent!!
https://www.flickr.com/gp/185688801@N03/7e6ALy

Star Trek: WTF! Post Canada went wild with all those Star Trek stamps, options, cards etc etc...! Geez! I wonder if William Shatner has copies of those! HEHE

@Musicman:
She'd been painting for 4-5 years now... she even took a few courses, but Youtube is her 'teacher' these days! lol kids.

@Rob1956:
Yep that's Kira's work - She is good, but nowhere near a prodigy like Victoria!! hehe Kira's upstairs with a friend... heck hold on I'll take a picture... brb

ok - they are having a painting party... (her friend is cheating with a pre-printed image! LOL). They are having fun - but worry not her stamp album is kept very FAR from the paint! LOL

The Star Trek 3-D item that Kira is holding is a souvenir sheet. It is fantastic!

Wow, Kira is a fantastic artist! When does her work go on a world-wide tour?

YES! it's pretty nice - it is holographic (changes depending on your viewpoint!)

heheh I'l tell her you said that Big Grin

CATALOG:
When Kira started her interest in stamps, I got her a used stamp catalog on eBay (the "2017 Unitrade Canada Specialized Catalog" to be precise... it has all these Star Trek images on the cover Happy ).

But that catalog stops at mid-2016 for the numbering. Checking for a more recent Catalog on eBay I noticed that someone is offering a 2018 PDF version...
The title is:

Unitrade Specialized Catalogue of Canadian Stamps 2018 PDF download

Link:
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Unitrade-Specialized-Catalogue-of-Canadian-Stamps-2018-PDF-download/223711415727

But I am not seeing many other PDFs... I was wondering if that was legit..!?

In any case, with XMas fast approaching, I am looking at catalogs on eBay. Or is there another method one can use get the (unitrade) numbers for (newer) stamps? A website perhaps?

Cheers!!

If Unitrade is not the seller, then I would question it's validity. There are groups in Russia, Serbia, and the like that copy catalogs (Scott, Gibbons, Michel, etc.) and digitize them. They'll sell downloads and/or CD/DVD discs of the catalogs. Those copies are not authorized by the catalog publishers.

The link is to a seller located in France. Also, Unitrade does not offer digitized copies of its catalogs. I let you be the judge.

Doesn't Unitrade use Scott numbers?

Scott offers an online subscription to their Canada E-Catalog for $14.99 USD. It is tied to the 2020 edition of the Standard Catalog. Here's the link if you want to investigate this further.

https://www.scottonline.com/2020-scott-canada-ecatalogue

Interesting that it is their Canada E-Catalog, but it has a picture of a Chinese stamp on the picture...oh Scott and the woes thereof...

Richard if you want a paper copy of the Unitrade 2020 this Canadian site has them at just under $40. Scroll down to item 701, or if you don't mind last years then item 702.

In regard to the illegal pdf/dvd catalogues I would be very wary of what else may be hidden within the disc. My understanding (could be wrong) but malware can be encoded inside an image or even in the "run" code.
Apart from which, buying knockoffs means genuine articles have to cost more because sales will be less.

Yeah I am not interested in any PDF... even less those from suspicious sources!

Kira likes the Unitrade catalog - so best to stick with that! It is pretty well made!
And it doesn't have to be the latest model... 2019 would be quite ok for her needs (and my budget, lol)

I have been printing Kira's Canada album pages and filling it up with these printed pages - and she decided to PAINT the cover of the binder! (I suggested placing tape on the edges to make a better finish!)

Here is a picture of her stamp binder with her painting on it!

Any suggestions of what she could Write (with Paint) as a title? hehe Consider that the binder has about 20 years of pages (about 80's to 2000's) and that the pages could be moved - we do need another Binder as I started printing her pages from 2001 to 2012 and these don't fit in that one!)

re: Seeking advice on stamp purchase for Daughter

I got a question:

My Daughter's birthday is coming up in 3 weeks, and I am wondering:

How would I go about getting her the "exact" (used) stamps she needs to complete a specific year in her album?

On eBay, most of the used stamps auctions for the years I am looking for (years 2000 to 2018) have stamps she already has a copy of.

It seems to me that getting stamps she doesn't need is not useful.

I am aware there is probably a stamp store somewhere around, but I suspect such a store would be costly - at least, more so then eBay auction types purchases.

Hence my query!

Cheers!

Auctions - Approvals
re: Seeking advice on stamp purchase for Daughter

My suggestion would be to put a list of the stamps needed under the section 'Stamps I want to Buy' and I'm sure some of the Stamporama members will be able to supply the stamps you want.

You could also check out our auction under 'Canada' or check all the Canadian Approval Books currently being offered.

ok while she was at school, I made the list of stamps she is missing from 2001 to 2003.
I am not seeing the section you mention. Where is it hiding on this site?!

Most of these seem to be very special stamps, for the expert collector!

This is a bit off topic but...

Does anyone here have a way to contact Rob1956, aside from Email (He has not replied to my emails in the last 4 weeks, which is peculiar as he always replied pretty quickly)

Furthermore, the last email he sent me indicated it was not going well for his Wife (see below) - I've been worried for weeks now, trying to figure out HOW I can get in touch with him....but failing at that.

Here is an excerpt from the last email he sent me on September 1st: (He lives in Australia)

"It’s been a hectic time here, ((**wife name**)) is very ill, she had all the symptoms of the virus, fortunately after testing she was cleared, but she is still very ill and will soon be seeing a few specialists. The state of Victoria is being torn apart by the Covid-19, the states now holds 90% of the nation’s death toll"

@RiTz21
I'm late to this thread, so forgive me if I'm telling you anything you already know. Are you and Kira aware of the security (anti-counterfeiting) features built into the wildlife stamps? If not, this can add a whole new dimension to her appreciation and enjoyment of the stamps. For example the whale stamp, when viewed under ultraviolet light, displays a scuba diver and a school of plankton. The dark blue wavy lines are made up of micro-printing giving the scientific name of the whale. On the Grizzly stamp, on the bear's right hind leg, if you kind of cross your eyes while staring at it with your tongue sticking out at just the right angle, you will discern the numeral 8 (for the $8 denomination). When the whale stamp was being designed, the Grizzly was the largest stamp ever produced by Canada Post, so they decided to make the while stamp twice as wide.

Also, I have a YouTube channel where I talk about stamps, and my latest episode happens to be on my top 20 most beautiful stamps of Canada, which includes the wildlife series, plus a couple of other stamps mentioned earlier in this thread, such as the 1999 dove stamp, and the 2007 stamp depicting Henri Membertou, the sakmow of the Mi'kmaq First Nations tribe.

Finally, I have some stamps of Canada I would like to donate towards Kira's collection, about which I will contact you by direct message.

Hi ArtStamp! Kira doesn't get much mail these days - luckily her Aunt (a medical secretary) is keeping stamps for her, and I found a small organism that agreed to keep stamps! It's only a trickle, but better than nothing! You are quite welcome to send her whatever stamps you can spare - For Canada, I'd say that the years 1999 to 2020 are the hardest to get (lots of empty slots in her album in those years). Well, she doesn't have many 2020 stamps, if only a few of the "P" stamps of 2020)

Yes, Kira received a UV light and we tried it on that stamp!! (I did take away the UV light.. not sure it's safe to "play" with, but it is available to her only under adult supervision) - Nifty stuff on that whale stamp! BUT I was NOT aware of the other Wildlife ones under UV!!! I'll try it out with her during the XMas holidays! THANKS for the Intel!
She does not have the Horse in that series (nor the falcon), which is funny as she collects Horses of the world lol

Video - Wow neat!! I gave it a thumbs up Big Grin

----------------
ALL:

Kira found a stamp and asked me if it was ... worth anything, or just a regular error in printing... well, I dunno so I am here to ask you experts! Image below (Sorry for the bad quality.. my dumb Android tablet is crappy at best - but you get the picture - pun intended! LOL)

On a side note, Kira has been getting better and better at painting - enough so that I *finally* decided to set her up in an "Online" Art gallery to try to sell some of her work (perhaps that will help offset the cost of all the paint and canvas she's going through arg...!) - I opened her store on Gallea, but these guys take a hefty % of the price (30% to be precise) - If you guys know of alternative that may be less costly (at least, for us in Canada), please let me know!

THANKS GUYS and BE SAFE!!

You can buy the quarterly stamp packs from Canada Post. They go back about 5 years, unless sold out earlier. You can subscribe to the packs, and get them each quarter too. I have been doing that for around 40 years. The stamps in the packs are sold at face value. Of course, you'll have your taxes to pay in Canada.

That 2c green must have been from a booklet (the bottom being imperforate), it is a pity someone cut the stamp on the left off, this is variety as the perforator didn't perforate between the stamps.

Nonetheless, it has an imperforate inner left which it shouldn't have, not worth much but it is a collectible stamp, regardless of it being commercially used (if the left stamp was intact and still on cover, the value would run into a few dollars.

This issue is known as the "Cameo issue". The 2c Cameo never appeared in a booklet form (booklets at this time were small and were for the purpose of machine vending).

It did appear in a cello-pack of 2 mini-panes of 25 stamps each, selling for $1.00. There are no recorded copies of "imperforate between" for this issue, so it is unlikely that the stamp was cut by the user.

The most likely source is, as Bob suggests above, that it is from the lower left corner of one of these mini-panes, from a pane that was inaccurately cut during production.

Hello,

Would your daughter want any stamps still on paper? I have more recent issues that are still not soaked. Also I have others that are soaked. They need a caring home and 8 would be glad to give them away. Mostly. 2000 to. 1019.

Send me a message and 8 can organize a photo to give you and idea of what I have.
