The beacon and generator shed associated with each arrow marker are central to the design of the U.S. air post stamp issued July 25, 1928 (Scott C11).
I didn't know about the concrete arrows! Here is a much more in-depth description with more photos (from the UK, no less): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/travel_news/article-3038232/Just-mysterious-concrete-arrows-America.html And here is the site with locations of arrows and/or beacons near you! http://www.dreamsmithphotos.com/arrow/index.html Fascinating! Lars
Thanks Lars and Tomiseksj for the extras, amazing what is out there under our noses.
Thia is what I enjoy about Stamporama!!! Interesting and always something new to share I learn something different each time I log into the site...
I have actually seen several of them on various hunting trips.
These are an integral part of the back story of the U.S. Scott # C11 beacon airmail stamp, which is my favorite stamp. I have visited a few of these markers and hope to see many more someday! Here is a link to an article with what I believe to be the most recent list of all known remaining Beacon concrete arrows...or the remnants thereof; http://sometimes-interesting.com/2013/12/04/concrete-arrows-and-the-u-s-airmail-beacon-system/ Quite a fascinating article and with great pictures....I printed the whole thing out and put it with my C11 collection of stuff! Randy
At the risk of sounding like I'm "tooting my own horn" see my article for info on how the markers were built; https://stamporama.com/articles/display_article.php?id=RA2QjH9DfAJts Randy
Okay...last post - I promise! Here is a more updated website; http://www.dreamsmithphotos.com/arrow/index.html Randy
Randy with your permission I would like to add your article with my copy of the C11 airmail stamp to my US collection Cheryl
Randy, Your final link is exactly the same as the one I posted the previous day. Did you even bother to check it first? It might have saved you a bit of time. Lars
Cheryl, By all means Lars, My apologies - didn't intend to upset you; an oversight. Randy
