United States/BOB & Other : Questions for the Experts - Future Delivery, NY Stock Transfer, & Private Die

I got these three in a group of BoB stamps and have a question about each. I hope the experts will help with my education again.

This RC26 has a 1933 cancel but Scotts has a date of 1934 for them. Is this something strange? or is this normal?

Is there a catalog of State Revenues? Randy steered me to Eric Jackson and I notice they use a numbering system but is it theirs or is there a Scotts or something like it for them.
They have a NY stock transfer like this one that is not as well centered as this example listed for $75.00. I'm wondering if that is a reasonable "Book Value" for this stamp. (For my records I have no intention of selling it)

Thanks in advance!

and lastly. This Brandreth private die is different than the one shown in the Scotts Specialized. It's a different size and is missing the "one cent" at the top. The closest one in Scotts is RS35. Is this just a variant of RS35 or a totally different stamp.

The Brandreth is a facsimile label, used by the company after the proprietary tax was repealed. The stamps were viewed (and often advertised) as signs of authenticity, so many of the companies, not just Brandreth, continued to place such facsimiles on their medicines and other proprietary products.

The State Revenue Society publishes a catalog. You can find information about it here.

Steven is correct about the State Revenue Catalog.

It's a large catalog and is a bit pricey at $97 for non-members.

I have the 2007 edition, but am planning on upgrading to the latest 2014 edition soon.

I am a member of the SRS and they have a good newsletter and also auctions in every issue.

Anyway, if I can help you with ID'ing any state or locals of US, please don't hesitate to ask; I'll do what I can.

I LOVE REVENUES! Big Grin

Oh, almost forgot!

Blair;

The NY state stock stamps are a HUGE collecting area all by themselves, and require much study to identify all the different varieties,
which are not always that simple.
And value varies greatly as well, depending on (accurate) ID.

Have a look at the following site and you will see what an exhaustive undertaking these revenues can be!

http://myplace.frontier.com/~ktk.lange/NewYorkStockTransferTax/

Kurt Lange does a wonderful job of cataloging many different varieties here and it can be a HUGE help to those who brave jumping into
this fun and interesting branch of state revs. I have a separate album for these and have been collecting them for quite a few years now,
but still am quite challenged regularly by them!

Have fun!

Okay.....one more thing!Laughing

If any of you are interested (and BRAVE!);

you can purchase album pages from the above mentioned website for these revenue stamps - just go to the very bottom of the page and you will see a link to purchasing the pages.
Happy

Hey Randy, I'm getting a error 404 on that link for some reason. I would love to have the pages for the state Revenues...

I'm starting to really enjoy all the revenues. I'm addicted to collecting though. I spent ALL morning going through a bunch of precancels I got on ebay. It was a stock book full and they had been listed in the wrong category. I got them for $.99 plus $1.00 shipping. There's 200 - 300 of them. Most are on variants of the 1922 - 25 definitives and range from 1/2c - 50c face value. Many are on Coil stamps... I'm having a blast trying to get them sorted and cataloged.
Thanks again!

Hi Randy;

Just a couple quick questions about the Stock Transfer stamp.

I appears that it is engraved in a blue/violet or cobalt color, but has red/violet '2's overprinted.

Was that the means of canceling these stamps? I have two of those and one looks almost identical
to this one. Is there much value in these? Over $1 or maybe over $5?

Just sortin' it out....

Musicman:

I love United States revenues, too!

In fact, I collect all USA used, including revenues. I don't collect Confederate stamps, Hawaii, Guam, etc.; just the good old USA. I limit myself to the precancels of NY State and the Lone Star State. I do not collect Officially Sealed Labels, because my friend collects those, and we help each other with our USA back-of-the-book.

I'm hoping to pick-up a new SRS Catalogue in the new year.

Blair -

I edited the link in my post so you can copy and paste it - that should work for you now.

Ken/Tusken -

I may be wrong, but I believe the overprint was to help prevent re-use.

David,

My main collection is used US as well, but I do also include the US possessions; however, this is limited to only those issued during the actual time of that US-possession-era.
